Bird Control:
Whether birds are beneficial, neutral, or harmful to human interests depends on their particular location and activity.  Birds are an important part of our natural environment. As predators, they feed on insects, rodents, worms, fish and countless other animals. However, certain birds are more likely to become pests, often including sparrows, woodpeckers, waterfowl, pigeons and black birds/crows. These birds may require bird proofing and bird management. Particular bird situations about which to be on guard might include:
  • Roosting or nesting around human properties.
  • Noise, droppings, odor, and feathers.
  • Feeding on agricultural products.
  • Destroying vegetation and contaminating foods.
  • Unpleasant or hazardous working conditions.
  • Spread of diseases or ectroparasites (mites, ticks, lice).

Some birds can be a serious nuisance. Each year, they, their droppings and nests cause tens of millions of dollars in property damage. They can contribute to respiratory problems, viral infections, and food poisoning. Over sixty diseases are associated with birds and their droppings. And actually, there are more bacterial organisms associated with birds that affect human health than all other disease-causing organisms.

The following is a description of some of them:
  • Salmonella is a bacteria that becomes airborne with feces dust in accumulated air intake vents, primarily at restaurants and food processing plants.
  • Histoplasmosis happens when the fungal organism spreads throughout the body via the bloodstream. Over 30 million people are affected annually with 10% exhibiting symptoms, particularly the young, elderly, and persons with weak immune systems. Contact usually occurs through air handling systems, contaminated clothing, and spores becoming airborne.  Species most associated are pigeons, blackbirds, and starlings.
  • Cryptococcis is another fungus that can be found in the feces of certain birds and can result in meningitis. It is estimated that 50% of the pigeon population in the Western United States is infected.
  • Chlamydiosis bacteria affects pigeons and gulls most often. Humans can contact the disease by inhaling bacteria-laden dust.
  • The Bird Flu (H1N1) and Newcastle disease are viruses that are highly contagious among birds and can spread quickly into commercial poultry flocks if not stopped. Occasionally bird flu can pass to humans.

Not only are birds carriers of bacterial diseases and produce excessive amounts of harmful urine and feces, but they can bring with them an additional infestation of ectoparasites such as feather louse and bird mites (similar to bed bugs but affecting birds). These insects are commonly found living and breeding in bird nests where they have easy access to their favorite meal: the blood of birds. When birds are eliminated, these mites can spread to other areas of the house or commercial building looking for new hosts. The most visible and damaging ectoparasites on birds are ticks and some of these can carry Lyme disease.

Aside from carrying disease, birds can cause damage by building nests in rain gutters and other drainage systems, which can cause water backup that can lead to dangerous and costly structural damage. Additionally, the acid from bird droppings and urine can eat at paints of buildings and ruin car finishes. Large flocks of birds have been known to cause damage to the local landscape and ecology and commercial equipment. An industry of bird removal services has been created to mitigate damage done to warehouses, airplane hangars, trees, signs, buildings and urban centers.

Three birds that most often become pests in urban areas are pigeons, starlings, and house sparrows. But other birds such as hawks and swallows occasionally cause unexpected and unusual trouble. Blackbirds and crows can also become an annoyance by roosting in suburban areas. Finally, woodpeckers may damage a home by pecking holes into the siding looking for insects, to make nest cavities, or to communicate with other woodpeckers.

Pigeon Control:
Pigeons or rock doves are extremely adaptable birds that can be found in nearly any environment outside of the driest and coldest regions. As a very social fowl species, they often appear in flocks of 20-30 birds. They are very intelligent: able to recognize their own reflection in a mirror, differentiate human faces, conceptualize thoughts, and recognize the alphabet. Furthermore, they are capable of detecting sounds at lower frequencies enabling them to sense oncoming storms and weather conditions.

Pigeon infestations often occur on rooftops of buildings, window sills, ledges and other convenient surfaces. The corrosive droppings then deface walkways, equipment, and vehicles below. Each pigeon leaves up to a pound of droppings per week and as mentioned earlier, those droppings can carry disease and cause human health problems. Additionally, pigeons may nest in vents and chimneys creating fire hazards.

Woodpecker Control:
In general, woodpeckers provide valuable ecological services by consuming substantial numbers of insects that may be agricultural and forest pests. Despite this, they can also become a nuisance as they can damage wood siding and soffits on structures or cause economic losses to utility companies due to cavities they’ve pecked in wooden power-line poles. The weakened poles are then susceptible to breaking in high winds. During the spring, woodpeckers will engage in territorial drumming on wooden or metal objects on the sides of homes, chimneys, and eaves, signs, or gutters. This drumming sound can be irritating to people during early morning hours.

All species of woodpeckers are classified as migratory non-game birds and are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They can only be trapped by obtaining a depredation permit through the Division of Fish and Wildlife. As such traditional scare tactics and repellents are used first to try to deal with any woodpecker pest problem.

Regimenting birds in general is a difficult task. Their mobility and high nests are a challenge for most people and businesses to deal with but here are a few ways to manage them. To deny birds places to land on ledges and overhangs, bird inhibition spikes can be installed. Additionally, bird netting can be used to keep birds from entering various unwanted guest spaces. Another method of restricting birds is to trap the current roosting birds and remove them. Once certain birds have taken up residence at your home or business property, they won’t leave on their own. With professional intervention you can take back control of your home from these unwanted guests. Call Parker Pest Control Services now as the longer you wait, the bigger the problem can become.
