These nocturnal garbage feeders prefer to live in moist, warm environments but will easily adapt to a wide variety of living conditions. They need warmth, food, water, and nesting locations; many homes and certain types of businesses such as restaurants or stores with food provide what they seek.
Although sanitation and hygiene are important deterrents, even the cleanest buildings or dwellings can attract cockroaches as these insects and their eggs are spread throughout the community in food and other packaging. The can be carried into the home in a bag or box of fruit or they can enter through vents, drain pipes, cracks and crevices. They can also migrate from an infested unit in multi-unit dwellings to other units in the same building. They can feed in areas with even the smallest deposits of grease, sugar, and other food remains in difficult to get at places such as behind refrigerators and dishwashers, inside cracks and crevices in kitchen cupboards, and in drains. And, if left unchecked, a cockroach onslaught can rapidly expand its numbers in a few weeks or months to become a major health and safety risk. These insects reproduce quickly and their eggs are naturally resistant to over-the-counter insecticides. An infestation of this kind often demands the assistance of an insect pest management service. In Colorado, there are three types of cockroaches that infest properties: German Cockroaches are light tan to brown in color. They have wings but do not fly. They can be identified by the dark parallel lines that run from the back of their heads to their wings and are often found invading kitchens and bathrooms since they prefer a moist living environment. American Cockroaches are a large species of cockroach and are able to fly. They are a reddish-brown to mahogany color and are identified by a distinctive yellow band behind their head. This species is most often found living in basements and bathrooms. Oriental Cockroaches are another large species of cockroach. They also have wings but cannot fly. This species is typically found living outdoors but can be found in bathrooms, wet basements, crawl spaces, and under porches. How dangerous are cockroaches? Cockroaches can bite, but typically don’t as they prefer other materials to feed on over humans. In the event a cockroach does bite a human, one may notice a lesion and some irritation or swelling. Aside from this, cockroaches can increase asthma problems. Research shows that individuals have a higher rate of asthma when roaches are present in the home, and a study conducted in 2005 discovered that allergens produced by cockroaches (from their feces and shed skin) are more dangerous than other asthma triggers, putting children and the eldery at greater risk. For this reason, any person who finds evidence of these bugs in their residence needs to immediately vacuum the entire home and clean any areas that may be affected with soap and warm water.
Aside from asthma, the greatest risk from cockroaches is their spread of disease. They pick up bacteria from sewers, dumpsters and trash cans and garbage disposals before making their way into homes and businesses. Even in the modern age, roaches can cause dysentery, typhoid, gastroenteritis, and can spread Salmonella and other dangerous bacteria. As such to prevent cockroach problems, proper sanitation is critical. Follow these tips to prevent infestations:
